EXPLORE OUR BANGLADESH PROGRAM

Water1st has projects in four countries: Bangladesh, Honduras, Ethiopia, and India. Explore our Bangladesh program through visuals and interactive reporting provided by Microsoft’s new Power BI program below, and see how the Water1st approach works in an urban context.

Click the “Projects” tab at the bottom of the report below to see maps, photos, and charts that you can customize by clicking the various features.

CONSISTENT SUPPORT IS KEY

We provide stable funding to our country partners, enabling them to retain qualified and experienced staff, develop strong relationships with local communities and leaders, and engage in long-term strategic planning.

Consistent grassroots support from our U.S. donor base has allowed our Bangladesh partner to improve their program year-after-year. Our projects serve the whole community – homes, schools, health clinics, and community centers. We have also scaled up and expanded our work from Dhaka to the second and third largest cities in Bangladesh, Chittagong (2009) and Khulna (2014).

REVOLVING LOAN FUND ALLOWS US TO REACH MORE PEOPLE

Users of the water systems and toilets pay all of the construction costs via a long-term, low-interest loan. Water1st provides the capital for these loans as well as grant support for mobilizing and training communities. Repaid loan funds are immediately revolved and used for new water and toilet projects. Since we started the loan program in 2006, repayment rates have averaged 97%. To provide some context, US News reports that colleges with “very high repayment rates” range from 87-92%.

A huge side benefit is that our philanthropic dollars are stretched farther and we can do more. This year, repaid loans allowed us to nearly double the amount of new projects we were able to support in Bangladesh.

Our Projects Are Built to Last

home-dawo-rev

We ask women who spend their days carrying 40-pound containers of water one simple question: “What do you want?” Their answer: They want to end the walk for water for themselves and for their daughters. Water1st’s approach is designed to ensure that we end their walk. Forever.
