CARRY 5 Walks for Water around the world raise nearly $50,000
Our 2nd annual CARRY 5 event season was a great success. Besides our event here in Seattle, CARRY 5 events were also held in Boulder, CO, Tucson, AZ, Redmond, WA, and Seoul, Korea. A huge thanks to everyone who participated in the events and to those people and companies who sponsored our walkers. Water 1st will be able to bring safe drinking water and toilets to thousands of people due to your generosity and support.
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON CARRY 5: $38,000
Over 450 children, adults, schools, businesses, and clubs were able to gain a first-hand understanding of the true burden of gathering water, and raise money to help end this long walk for so many around the world.
The event was held at Seattle’s Seward Park on Saturday, May 30th. Individual and team participants tried to carry 5 gallons of water for 5 kilometers along Lake Washington Blvd, the average walk made by people in poor countries who lack access to safe, convenient water supplies.
CARRY 5 participants raised more than $38,000 both online and offline to support the work of Water 1st in Honduras, Ethiopia, Bangladesh and India. Participants raising $50 or more were given a CARRY 5 t-shirt. MORE
BOULDER, COLORADO CARRY 5: $900
On April 23rd, 60 fourth grade students from Whittier Elementary School in Boulder, CO raised $900 for safe drinking water by participating in a CARRY5 Walk for Water. They started off by walking from their school to Goose Creek to collect water. Then they walked all the way back to the school with their heavy containers. MORE
TUCSON, ARIZONA CARRY 5: $3,500
CARRY 5 in Tucson, AZ was organized by University of Arizona sutednts. About 50 people participated in Tucson’s CARRY 5 event, raising $3,500. A local bluegrass band played to entertain the walkers, who each carried water - from 1 to 5 gallons - for 5 kilometers, the average distance walked by women in Africa who lack access to safe water. REDMOND, WASHINGTON CARRY 5: $1800
On May 23, students from Overlake High School in Redmond, Washington held a CARRY 5 Event, which raised over $1800 for people in need of safe drinking water and toilets. The event was organized by two Overlake 9th graders, Grace Grubb and Madeleine Colvin, who started an organization called Dig Deep in 2008.
Fifty people joined in the exciting event. Many of the students carried water on their backs in an effort to better understand the difficult walk millions of women and girls make every day to gather water. MORE
SEOUL, KOREA CARRY 5: $5,000
On May 22nd, 200 fourth and sixth grade students at the Korea International School walked for water along Seoul’s Tancheon River, raising over $5,000 dollars and making CARRY 5 an international event!
Fourth grade teacher Christine Martin says that the interest in CARRY 5 came when she was doing some research about water consumption as part of their school’s Earth Day curriculum. She found Water 1st’s website and a video made by a young supporter, Stella, who participated in our Seattle CARRY 5 Walk for Water last year. “The YouTube video just resonated with me,” wrote Christine in an email to Water 1st in April.
