350 People CARRY 5 in Seattle, raising over $35,000

More than 350 Seattleites of all ages gathered at Seward Park on June 5 for Water 1st’s 3rd annual CARRY 5 Walk for Water. Individual and team participants filled their containers with water from Lake Washington and tried to carry 5 gallons of water for 5 kilometers, the average walk made by people in poor countries who lack access to safe, convenient water supplies.

Dig Deep exceeds its ambitious $10,000 goal!

Huge Kudos to Dig Deep! Dig Deep is essentially two high school students, Madeline and Grace, who decided that they wanted to do something about the world water crisis. As they were entering the ninth grade, they decided to set a goal of raising $10,000 and applying it to a water project in Ethiopia. Over the past two years, they have been selling t-shirts, water bottles, holding raffles, organizing fundraising walks, etc.

As of May 21st, they reported that they had exceeded their goal of $10,000. Once all their latest contributions have been tallied, they think they will be able to send Water 1st a check large enough to fund a public water tap in Kelecho Gerbi, Ethiopia, AND a water point in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Grace and Madeline are the perfect example of two individuals who decided they could make a tangible difference in the lives of the poor. Thanks to their hard work, more than 130 people will have access to safe water, a toilet, and hygiene education.

Congratulations, Madeline and Grace! You’ve made a huge impact on the life of many people and you have demonstrated to all of us that we do have the power to change the world.

Quote of the day

Julie McCoy (center, brown shirt) at the end of our work day in Ethiopia in January 2009

We just had to share this email from Julie McCoy, owner of one of our favorite Seattle companies, Mercury, a corporate sponsor of our Fall Give Water Give Life Benefit. In 2008, after Julie traveled with Water 1st to Ethiopia, Mercury also created this great video to help us teach people about the global water crisis and our CARRY 5 event.

When we asked Julie if Mercury would be able to renew their corporate sponsorship this year, she said, “It is noticeably leaner for the business this year but the need is not any leaner is it?

Thank you, Julie and Mercury, for believing in the work of Water 1st, and for making a sacrifice so that we can keep our promises as an organization to the people we serve.

In either currency, it’s an amazing accomplishment. On May 22nd, 200 fourth and sixth grade students at the Korea International School walked for water along Seoul’s Tancheon River, raising over $5,000 dollars and making CARRY 5 an international event!

Fourth grade teacher Christine Martin says that the interest in CARRY 5 came when she was doing some research about water consumption as part of their school’s Earth Day curriculum on conservation, consumption, waste and recycling. She found Water 1st’s website and a video made by a young supporter, Stella, who participated in our Seattle CARRY 5 Walk for Water last year. “The YouTube video just resonated with me,” wrote Christine in an email to Water 1st in April.

Christine’s husband, also a teacher at the school, was inspired too, and decided to get his sixth graders involved in the walk.

The students set a goal of $750, to provide enough for construction of a public water point serving 500 people in Ethiopia.   They worked hard and surpassed their goal easily, raising over $5,000 in cash they collected in water bottles.

“The most rewarding part of this so far is the genuine interest in the students to contribute, educate and act,” said Christine after the walk was completed.

We couldn’t agree more.  We often hear about the big gifts given to charities by wealthy foundations and corporations.  However, the truth is, over 80% of charitable donations come from individuals.  We are the ones with the power to transform lives, and the students of Korea International School have proven this with their collective fundraising efforts on behalf of the world’s poorest citizens.  $5 collected from an aunt or $10 collected from a neighbor.  All those gifts add up to change the lives of people who lack life’s basics - water and toilets.

Please join me in thanking the students of KIS for their great work and a very successful walk for water!

Starbucks supports Water 1st at CARRY5

We’re glad our friends from Starbucks are supporting Water 1st again at this year’s CARRY 5 Event. Starbucks will be serving iced and hot coffee, and also donating bottles of Ethos Water for our walkers to enjoy on what promises to be a nice sunny day.

We’d also like to thank Starbucks store manager, Alison Schmidt, who has organized Starbucks volunteers who will be serving coffee at the event. Alison has started a team (Starbucks) on our fundraising site. Also, because Alison and her Starbucks partners are donating their time at our event, Starbucks will grant Water 1st $1000 for their volunteer hours. Water 1st is very thankful to Starbucks, and we look forward to continuing our partnership in providing safe water to the poorest people on earth.
