Water1st is accepting applications for the 2023 Global Fellows Program. Global Fellows will participate in a weeklong field seminar alongside Water1st staff, Honduras partners and project beneficiaries, February 18th- 25th, 2023.

Why do we believe this program is important?
The development philosophy & practices of Water1st are critical to sustainable development—and we believe that they are worth passing along to the next generation of global leaders. Our ‘classroom’ in Honduras is an ideal incubator in which students will simultaneously learn and grow. Ultimately, we hope to nurture responsible global citizens who, through first-hand exposure, are left with a deeper understanding of their role in effective global development.

What will the curriculum entail?
Students will be exposed to various topics related to Global Development: public health, community-led development, economics, technology, water system & toilet design, gender issues, fundraising, and the history & culture of Honduras.

How do I apply and how many students will be selected to travel?
The application deadline is Tuesday, October 18, 2022. Additional interviews will be scheduled upon request. We will take up to 9 students. Please see the attached application and information regarding travel details and cost. A $500 deposit will be required once notified of your acceptance to the program. Please don’t be discouraged if you are not selected this year—we hope to have the capacity to expand in subsequent years.

Will I have additional advocacy expectations?
Yes. We expect that students who participate in this unique opportunity will return from Honduras with a deeper understanding of the complexities of extreme poverty and, therefore, a stronger voice for women and girls who spend their days carrying water. Additional advocacy and fundraising by these students will be expected, around $1,000. Beyond individual fundraising expectations, students will develop one group fundraising activity. We will prepare students to be advocates while their personal experience will enable them to educate and inspire a larger audience.

Will there be additional meetings, beyond high school board meetings?
Yes. We will have a separate curriculum leading up to the trip that will prepare students for the experience and upon our return to debrief and strategize additional fundraising ideas. Meeting day and time will be determined by the group.

Dietary Restrictions
Please note that vegetarian and vegan food options may not always be available during travel.

Cell Phones
Cell Phones will be locked and stored during the day. Students will have limited access to their phones in the mornings and evenings.
