Azacualpa Centro is a community of 1,040 people with breathtaking views in rural Honduras. Most people work a variety of jobs depending on the season: they care for livestock, clear fields, and pick coffee.
Every day, the women and girls walk to collect water for their families from the natural springs scattered across the mountainside, making the trip as many as six times a day. In March and April, these springs dry up completely, forcing them to walk even farther to the closest stream to wash clothing and gather water for cooking, cleaning, bathing, and drinking.
But not for long.
Proceeds from this year’s Carry5 Walk for Water will end the walk for water for the women and girls of Azacualpa Centro. When we meet our fundraising goal, every household on this beautiful mountainside will have clean water, a shower, and a toilet.
Azacualpa Centro is organized and ready to do their part. The mountain spring and surrounding watershed has been purchased and protected; the community is being trained to build and maintain their system; seventeen miles of trench is being dug by hand where pipe will be laid; a 10,000 gallon storage tank is under construction. Each step during this yearlong process will guarantee a healthy system for generations to come.
