Taken in 2024 by David Fox, Water1st photographer, this evocative photograph captures a woman collecting water at dawn in Nyatigo, Kenya—the first to wake in her household, beginning her day with the long walk to fetch water for breakfast.

The image was taken as Water1st’s Nyatigo project was under construction, with new household water connections being installed every day. For this woman and her neighbors, the long walk for water is coming to an end.

In the near future, her day will begin with a cup of coffee—not a walk for water.

A poignant moment of both resilience and transformation, this photograph embodies the hope and progress that Water1st brings to communities around the world.
