Marla Smith-Nilson, founder and executive director of Water 1st, has been selected as a SELF Magazine 2013 WOMEN DOING GOOD Honoree. SELF magazine called Smith-Nilson ‘The Lifesaver’ for her work bringing water and sanitation solutions to developing countries. Other honorees include musician Shakira and celebrity chef Padma Lakshmi. Honorees are selected because they are changing the world and our perceptions of what a passionate, inspired woman can do.
On September 11, Smith-Nilson will travel to New York where she will be interviewed on a national morning news show and given $5,000 to support Water 1st and future clean water projects.
“The people we work with all over the world are the source of my inspiration and motivation,” said Smith-Nilson. “I hope this award is a way to spotlight the people I consider to be the real heroes – our supporters in the United States who makes this work possible and the people in the communities we serve who make huge sacrifices to create healthier lives for their children through access to clean water.”
